Over the last years, dual language immersion programs have become increasingly famous and available to all families. In some schools, parents now have the option to enroll their child in dual language classrooms.

What are dual language immersion programs? Dual language immersion programs or two way bilingual, as sometimes referred to in some schools, are classes that teach English and Spanish or, in some cases, English and Mandarin simultaneously. Immersion programs begin early in kindergarten or, sometimes, before kindergarten.

There are several teaching models used to teach dual language learners. Some schools choose to alternate the target language every other day. others may choose to teach half of the day in English and half of the day in Spanish or other language. In a Spanish dual language immersion program, students learn Mathematics in Spanish with English support from the English teacher. Students are also taught Spanish language arts focusing on reading, listening, speaking, and writing. English language instruction focuses on English language arts along with listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Teachers use lots of music and movement to teach young learners and make learning fun.

Dual language programs are available in many schools across the USA. As a parent, you have the option to enroll your child in a school-wide Elementary immersion school or in the add-on immersion programs that some elementary schools have opted to offer to begin in kindergarten.
